Lore & Background

Toulouse was founded by the Romans and became a Roman military outpost in the 2nd century BC. Under Emperor Augustus, the Romans moved the city from the hills to the banks of the River Garonne for better trade. The city later became the capital of the province of Languedoc in the Late Middle Ages and early modern period, and is now the capital of the administrative region of Occitania. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Toulouse was a centre of Latin culture and troubadour poetry in Occitan. The city's unique architecture, made of pinkish terracotta bricks, earned Toulouse the nickname 'La Ville rose' ('The Pink city').

Reader's Guide

Toulouse's significance lies in its dual role as a historical capital and a modern industrial powerhouse. As the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom and later of Languedoc, it was a key political and cultural centre in southern France, fostering Occitan language and troubadour culture. Today, it is the heart of the European aerospace industry, with headquarters of Airbus, ATR, and the Aerospace Valley, and hosts the largest national space centre in Europe (CNES's Toulouse Space Centre) as well as a NATO space centre of excellence. Its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites—the Canal du Midi, the Basilica of St. Sernin, and the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques—underscore its historical and architectural importance.
